The child marriages were recently stopped in Tandur,
Sirpur (U), Nirmal and Adilabad mandals
in the last two months as also in Bangaruguda and Mavala gram panchayats which is
surprising as they are on the outskirts of the Adilabad district headquarters.
But for the
most part, it is an evil that persists due to official apathy, with even gram
panchayats failing in the task, and lack of awareness among the people.
Four child marriages were stopped in the last two
months in the district just before the bridegroom tied the knot though the
intervention of police, Revenue department
and ICDS staff, but Child Welfare Committee members say that many were performed
successfully without information passing outside into the interior areas of the
district.
What is surprising is that the vent in Yellapalli
village in Nirmal mandal, was stopped only after invitees had lunch. This is the
home town of endowment minister Allola Indrakaran Reddy and adopted by him
under Grama Jyoti programme.
Sarpanch of Yellapalli Pitla Bheemanna said that 'they
had no information about the marriage until the police intervened, which shows
the irresponsibility of grampanchayats, VRO’s and the village secretary’
District committee member of the CWC Mirza Yakoob
Baig, said that gram panchayats and VROs and village secretaries should have
information what was going on in their respective villages.
He said members should take up child marriages for
discussion in the Zilla Parishad, mandal and grampanchayat meetings and take
steps to create awareness among the people against the child marriages.
