Police adopting latest tech to battle crime

The new facial recognition technology is likely to turn into  a nightmare for criminals and prior offenders when it comes absconding from the Karimnagar commissionerate.

Police are now likely to use facial recognition technology through CCTV cameras. They can then use these to link to photographs of prior offenders.

The  CCTV camera sends alerts to the command control when any of the faces of uploaded on the software have been recognised. This new technology is likely to help police in reducing crime.

Karimnagar Police Commmissioner  V.B Kamalasan Reddy told this newspaper, “CCTV cameras have been set up at various locations and they will capture and send messages to the date base”. He said each CCTV camera  would be the equivalent of 30 police when it comes to controlling crime.

So far, the Karimnagar police commisisonerate has installed 2,500 of the target of 50,000 cameras. The police department has already created a database of offenders and criminals, along with their photographs and thumb and palm impressions.          

“Now image of a single person is being captured in six CC Tv cameras and stored in the data base with the help of the CC Tv cameras set up under the Karimnagar police commissionerate, said Kamalasan Reddy and added that efforts were being to capture the image of a single person in 50 CCTv cameras set up at various places”

The Automatic Finger Printing Identification (AFIS) technology is being used to trace individuals with criminal backgrounds. These devices will work with Russian technology, and the fingerprint experts came from all  the districts had a 10-day training conducted by the experts from the Russia.

The training was at Central Crime Station ( CCS), CID office, Hyderabad and in turn the latter will train the local police in all the districts.

Fingerprint mobile devices and live scanners have been supplied to the district police and these are being used during patrolling , especially at night.

Drought hits minor forest produce

The drought has affected the yield of minor forest produce in the district. Adivasis collect minor forest produce Thuniki Pandlu, Tuniki Akulu (tendu leaves), Morripandlu, Mahua, Palapandlu and many other fruits available in the forests in the summer.

They say they are hardly finding fruits in the jungle due to lack of good crop because of no rains. Earlier, elders and even children used to go into nearby jungles and collect the minor forest produce.

A collection of minor forest produce is no more generating an additional income for the Adivasis like in the past when they used to get more verities of fruits in the forests during the summer.

The Thuniki Pandlu (fruits) have been seen rarely these days in the markets days as their availability has come down drastically with beedi leaves contractors and collectors cutting off the trees to get leaves easily instead of wasting time in fluking each tendu leaf.

Sometimes tendu leaves contractors to burn the tendu trees to ensure the growth of fresh leaves and this results in fall in the number of tendu trees in the forests.

Kanaka Bheembai, of Marlavai in Jainoor mandal, said that there is no much minor forest produce is available in the forests to collect due to lack of rains and some  

Adivasis are scared of entering forests to collector minor forest produce with the fear after forest department setting up CCTV cameras and dug up big trenches.

She said most of them avoiding collecting minor forest produce in the jungles due lack of water and high temperatures and added that a bear which came out of the jungles in search of water attacked a villager in his agriculture fields near forests few days ago in her village.

CCTVs to be set up at SSC centres

The director of school education, who held a video conference with all the district education officials instructed to them to set up CCTV cameras at ‘self- examination’ centers for SSC examinations to avoid any malpractice.

The director had earlier issued instructions to install CCTV cameras at all the examination centres, but withdrew this suggestion after opposition from the parents and teachers’ unions.

The officials opined that there was every possibility of teaching staff encouraging malpractice at their own centres to ensure that their school children got good marks as there was no jumbling system.

Teaching staff can easily encourage in mass copying in the examinations as only students of the same school write examinations at that centre. And there are several government schools holding the examinations at their own centres in Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda and Mahaboobnagar districts but none in Adilabad.          

What will pose a problem for students appearing examinations from March 21 is the shortage of drinking water in the district since the last one month.

Efforts are being made to provide purified water to the students at examination centres, and the district education department is in the process of identifying the lack of basic amenities like drinking water facility, toilets, fans and benches in the 204 schools selected as examination centre for SSC examinations.

A total 43,291 students- 19,043 girls and boys 18,396 - were appearing the examinations for the first time while there were 5,852 reappearing for the examinations, having failed in it last year.

Efforts are being made to improve the SSC pass percentage as district stood was ranked last in the state last year. Special classes are also being held in schools and hostels.

The director of school education instructed has instructed to the education department to ensure that benches be provided for the students to write on instead    of sitting on the floor.

The district medical and health department will set a medical camp at examination centres to give primary treatment if any students due to suns stroke or any other problem. The revenue department will provide drinking water facility at all the examination centers.

CCTVs come handy for police to check parking

The CCTV cameras installed in the towns have come in handy for police department in controlling the haphazard traffic and illegal parking at road side in the towns in the district. As many as 400 CCTV cameras installed at various centre points in Nirmal, Adilabad,Mancherial, Bhainsa and Bellampalli in the Adilabad district of Telangana.

Recently, 75 high resolution CC TV cameras were installed at various locations and also entry and exit points in the Adilabad town and community CCTV controlling room was set up in the traffic police station.

A team comprising ASI and four constables were monitoring the cameras footage  on huge screen connected to the CCTV cameras at the control room round the clock in three shifts. These CCTV cameras record every movement in and around the location where installed.     

SP Dr Tarun Joshi said ‘the police monitoring the control room immediately communicate the information to the mobile or Rakshak parties to handle the situation if notice anything unwanted happening like traffic jams, or bike theft, bike racing chain snatching and accident or any illegally parked vehicle causing blocking the free flow of traffic’.

He said CCTV cameras which have night vision technology and will indirectly give security to one and all including the banks.

State government has realized the importance of the installation of CCTV cameras to control and prevent the crime and traffic jams and to identify the persons moving suspiciously and have supplied CCTVs to all the districts in the state.

Traffic jams have become regular phenomena at Amedkar chowk, Kisan chowk and Gandhi chowk due to illegal parking and pavements encroached upon by the shop owners in the Adilbad town. Petty businessman and road side vendors set up their business in the middle of the roads causing hug traffic jams.

Adilabad Municipal Chairperson Rangineni Manisha said ‘they were preparing an action plan to remove encroachments for free flow of traffic] and avoid inconvenience to the commuters and public in the Adilabad’.
